Why you should video call before your first date (and how to make it easy)
Oct 19, 2026
You have been chatting for a few days, the conversation flows, and a date feels like the next step. Before you pick a café, try a short video call. It is the single easiest way to make online dating safer and less awkward.
Five reasons to video call first
- It confirms they are real. Someone who matches their photos on a live call is very unlikely to be a fake profile or a scammer.
- You learn more in five minutes than in five days of texting. Voice, humour, energy and how they listen all come through on a call.
- It saves you a wasted evening. If there is no spark, you find out from your sofa, not across a table.
- The first date is less awkward. You have already "met", so you skip the nervous first few minutes.
- It respects your safety. Meeting someone you have only texted is a bigger leap than meeting someone you have seen and heard.
How to suggest it naturally
Keep it light and give a reason:
- "I'm enjoying this! Quick video call this weekend before we plan something?"
- "I'm better on calls than texts 😄 Free for 10 minutes tonight?"
- "Before we meet, want to do a quick call? Helps me feel comfortable."
Most genuine people will say yes. If someone repeatedly refuses or always has an excuse, treat it as a red flag.
Keep your number private
You don't need to swap numbers to call. On Jodi, voice and video calls are free inside the app once you have both sent a message. Your phone number is never shared, calls go directly between your phones, and they are never recorded. If the call goes badly, you can close the chat or block and report the person, and they still don't have your number.
Tips for a good first call
- Keep it short. Ten to fifteen minutes is perfect. End while it is still fun.
- Pick a quiet place with decent light. Face a window rather than having it behind you.
- Have two or three questions ready. "What's the best trip you've taken?" or "What does a perfect Sunday look like for you?"
- Be yourself. No need to dress up. The point is to see the real person, and to let them see you.
- Don't share anything you wouldn't on a first date: home address, workplace details or financial information.
Red flags on a call
- Camera "not working" every single time.
- The person on screen doesn't match the photos.
- Pressure to take the call off the app, or to move to a private messaging app quickly.
- Any mention of money, investments, gifts or emergencies.
If something feels off, end the call. You don't need a reason.
After the call
If it went well, suggest a short first date in a public place: coffee, a walk in a busy park, or a food street. Use Jodi's Date check-in so a friend knows where you are.
